Honestly, I’m not even sure what ESPN is doing anymore. Between First Take, Sportsnation and now this, the network seems to be going right down the tubes. Who could have possibly thought that this segment was a good idea?
Barry Melrose hasn’t appeared on ESPN much, due to the NHL Lockout, and it looks as though ESPN was trying to find a use for him; since they are still paying him money. He starts off the segment by talking about gifts he has gotten for different players and the different leagues and the fans, all the while he is surrounded by ESPN interns sitting on the floor. Then finishes it off by pleading with Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr to end the NHL Lockout.
I’m not really sure where they were going with the whole idea where he says that he gave the NFL Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck. It’s like they want him to pretend that he is actually Santa Claus, even though he doesn’t have a beard and everyone watching knows its Barry Melrose. This was one of the most bizarre and poorly planned segments I’ve seen in a while.
