Former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb appeared on Comcast SportsNet’s Thursday edition of “Daily News Live” and offered his take on the Philadelphia Eagles first coaching search in 14 years.
McNabb was not a fan of the idea of adding Chip Kelly for multiple reasons and thought it would be a lot like just picking a name out of a hat, or picking the “hot” name and not the right fit. McNabb then offered up what he thinks would fit and even threw out some suggestions.
“I would say the next move now is to move to a defensive-minded coach,” McNabb said. “Have someone come in here and be able to get these guys disciplined, understanding what they have to do, being gap sound, being in the right position at all times, and then bring an offensive guru in — someone who can run an offense and run it effectively.”
“Obviously, you look at [Mike] Nolan (Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator). Everywhere he’s been, his defenses played well. He hasn’t had success as a head coach, but when he’s been defensive coordinator, his defenses have played well.”
Later in the interview, McNabb was then asked about the best job opening and he ranked a Top 3 and where the Eagles position stood. “Chicago is a hot-spot, number one,” McNabb said. “Number two, possibly looking at something like Arizona because that’s a division (NFC West) where you don’t have to win 10, 11, 12 games to win that division, and the Eagles would probably rank third.”
Personally, I disagree with McNabb on all of this. I think the Eagles skill position players fit Chip Kelly’s offense perfectly. LeSean McCoy, Bryce Brown, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin all have speed, and could run the spread offense. But, the biggest flaw in his argument is saying that in the NFC West you don’t have to win 10, 11, or 12 games to win the division. Was he even watching the NFL this year? San Francisco and Seattle both won 11 games and Seattle didn’t even win the division because the 49ers tied the St. Louis Rams. Perhaps McNabb should do a little research before offering his opinion in this coaching search.
