Don Zimmer, a baseball lifer, passed away yesterday at the age of 83. Vin Scully got emotional talking about the former Dodger, so did the Rays broadcast.
As far as Zimmer playing/managing on the diamond, there was nothing more notable of Zimmer’s career in baseball than the time he tried to fight Pedro Martinez during Game 3 of the 2003 ALCS while he was the bench coach of the New York Yankees. After Martinez hit Karim Garcia with a pitch, the two rivals saw there benches clear. Then for some reason, Zimmer rushed to the pitching mound, attempting to punch Martinez with a left-hook. The end result for Zimmer wasn’t the greatest, who went to the hospital and somehow only ended with a cut after getting tossed to the ground.
Your presence in baseball will certainly be missed, Zimmer. R.I.P.
