On Saturday the West Virginia Mountaineers and Nike unveiled their new football uniforms. They have three helmets, three jerseys and three pants, which will allow them to make 27 different combinations. The Mountaineers will have a traditional all-blue set, then the solid all-gold set with their brand new matte gold helmet. And finally their slick new white uniforms and awesome new helmet. The West Virginia website provided some insight into the new uniforms, also stating that this is the first time since 1978 they will have a gold helmet and the first time since 1979 they will have a white helmet.
The players will have three different Nike jersey colors to choose from including blue, gold and white, along with the same three color options for their pants. Stitched inside the back collar of all three jerseys will be the West Virginia state motto, Montani Semper Liberi, (Latin for “Mountaineers are Always Free,”). A canary image also will be stitched inside the front collar representing West Virginia’s great coal heritage; miners once used canaries to help protect them from dangerous gasses whenever they entered the mine.
The new jerseys will have a unique number style that is exclusive to West Virginia University, featuring sharp points and edges inspired by a miner’s pickaxe.
I’m a huge fan of these uniform designs, and I think they’ll be able to make some sweet combinations with them. I can’t wait to see these in action in the fall.
