Penn State hires Vanderbilt’s James Franklin as head coach

James Franklin Penn State CoachAccording to a report, former Vanderbilt head coach, James Franklin, has accepted the Penn State position.

Penn State also appeared interested in Miami’s Al Golden and the Tennessee Titans’ Mike Munchak before settling on the 41-year-old Franklin. Franklin is replacing Bill O’Brien, who left for the Houston Texans.

Franklin took Vanderbilt to three consecutive bowl games with a 23-15 overall record and is considered by most to be a great recruiter.  He also interviewed for the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns positions.

Franklin will have to deal with a two-year bowl ban at Penn State, but has at least two seasons with a star quarterback in Christian Hackenberg. He will also be challenged by a very difficult East side of the new Big Ten division with Michigan State, Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, Rutgers and Maryland to play against yearly.
