With Notre Dame playing their first night game since 1990, the school decided to reveal a new set of headgear for the game against the University of Southern California.
Notre Dame head coach, Brian Kelly, and athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, said that the school was unhappy about the previous helmets and that they didn’t replicate the shade of gold that’s on the Golden Dome.
“We’ve been frustrated with the helmet,” Kelly said. “It just has never gotten to the right color. We want it to be the Golden Dome. I mean, that’s the representation for me. Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about, but that’s the gold that we were looking for. Still has the flake, the gold flake in it. The only difference is our managers won’t paint these.”
Notre Dame will continue to use 23.9 karat gold flakes in the helmet, but will no longer be painted on a weekly basis by team managers. The new helmet didn’t appear to help Notre Dame’s cause, as they lost to Southern California 31 to 17.
