Mel Tucker, talking with Lansing State Journal about the upcoming season, shared what it is taking for the Spartans to land the ‘big fish.’
“How do you get Bai Jobe? How do you get Sam Leavitt? How do you get these guys, (Andrew) Depaepe, players like that? I mean these are good, young players. You fight for them. And it’s not easy, but it’s just what’s necessary. I don’t know how we can expect to win the Big Ten and get in the playoffs and win a national championship if we don’t have the best players. I don’t know how you do that. So we’re moving in the right direction with facilities. NIL is a big issue right now. You’ve got teams in this conference spending $12, $13 million a year on NIL. We’re not even close to that. So it’s a dogfight.”
As Tucker notes, several teams in the B1G are already spending big win NIL, up to $12/$13 million, but the Spartans are not at that level.
The Spartans are in on five-star DL target David Stone, but he is trending towards Oklahoma.
