Florida State Head Coach Jimbo Fisher expressed his discontent with the BCS when he was told that some of the computer polls have the Seminoles ranked behind some teams with 4 or 5 losses. Fisher responded to the comment rhetorically by saying, “How retarded is that?”
He wasn’t finished though. He continued on by saying that the BCS “stinks” and declared some of the objections he had with the system, such as being ranked lower because they play worse opponents than some teams.
While Fisher has some valid points, using the word “retarded” to describe something you don’t like or think is stupid is widely unacceptable and ill-advised. Many people found the usage of the word very offensive, and Fisher was quick to issue an apology.
“It was brought to my attention I used a word during today’s conference that I did not intend to use,” Fisher said. “That’s not the way I think. It was a poor choice of words. I didn’t mean to offend anyone in any way. Please accept my sincere apology.”
Hopefully next time Fisher will be far more careful when selecting his word choice.
