Larry Bird and Magic Johnson battled on the basketball court during the National Championship Game between Indiana State and Michigan State, and also in the NBA with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. Now they have another battle.
According to the Associated Press, Indiana State plans to build a 15-foot tall bronze statue for its former basketball player, Larry Bird. It’s reported that the statue will be unveiled in the fall of 2013 at the Indiana State’s arena, the Hulman Center.
Sculptor Bill Wolfe “wants to make sure Bird’s statue is taller than those of Magic Johnson, whose Michigan State team beat Bird’s Indiana State team in the 1979 NCAA championship game.”
“I don’t have anything against Magic,” Wolfe said. “Larry is just better,” Wolfe said in unison with Jack Fox, director of development for the Indiana State University Foundation.
Although these two developed the ultimate rivalry, I’m sure neither would be concerned who had the bigger statue.
