Michigan was scheduled to do a satellite camp at Bob Jones High School in Madison, Alabama, on June 6th.
However, because of a bylaw passed on April 12th by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (the date of the UM camp had been announced a month earlier), member football coaches can only participate in camps involving their players on the weeks of June 27, July 4, July 11 and July 25.
“We’re not going to have it,” Patriots coach Kevin Rose told AL.com. “To have that many kids, 500 kids, they need 12 high school coaches to help work the camp. And since that’s no longer legal, they won’t be coming to Bob Jones.”
Below is a timeline:
March 4th: Michigan and Bob Jones High School announced camp for June 6th.
April 8th: NCAA bans satellite camps.
April 12: The Alabama High School Athletic Association passes bylaw for dates when football coaches can participate in camps (June 6th not included).
April 28th: NCAA rescinds satellite camp ban.
May 12th: Alabama’s new high school rule nixes Michigan’s camp in Madison, Alabama.
The Wolverines still have camps (28 right now) scheduled throughout the United States and internationally (Australia and Samoa).
Alabama plans on attending the SoundMind SoundBody event in Detroit this summer.
