Jennifer Coney, the mother of No. 1 recruit Rashan Gary, a top Michigan football target, talked with Todderick Hunt of NJ.com about D.J. Durkin heading to Maryland possibly affecting her son’s decision.
“D.J. and Mattison (defensive line coach Greg Mattison) just came to the school (Paramus Catholic) on Monday to see Rashan and I was very shocked but happy for him that he got the job,” said Coney. “The thing is, who’s gonna replace him at Michigan, and just how much of a difference will it make?”
“Durkin was a great guy. He was hands on. When we were at the college, he was hands on,” she said. “You know, normally you don’t see a defensive coordinator so hands on when it comes to recruiting. But Durkin and Mattison, they were a team and they were right there.
“Every time I saw them at the school, they were together. It was really good. So I wish him well. That’s all I can do, congratulate him and wish him well and hope Michigan does a great job filling his spot. But him leaving doesn’t have a huge impact, it’s his successor that will have the impact.”
Seems the Wolverines are still the team to beat with the 6-foot-4, 295-pounder.
