William Gholston is a former Five Star recruit out of Detroit’s Southeastern High School. He chose to play college football at Michigan State instead of their instate rivals, Michigan.
The two instate rivals squared off on Saturday and it was Gholston who made a name for himself during the 2nd quarter when he blatantly pulled Denard Robinson’s face mask, well after the whistle.
Although this is an instate rivalry and the emotions are high, this is classified as a dirty play. Gholston was flagged for a personal foul on the play and interestingly enough, was flagged again when he landed a right hand to the face mask of Michigan’s left tackle, Taylor Lewan.
Gholston was not ejected from the game, but probably should have been. B1G commissioner, Jim Delaney, will most likely suspend him when MSU takes on the Wisconsin Badger next Saturday. It was a chippy game as you can tell by another late hit video. MSU eventually pulled off the game, 28-14.
In the post game presser, Denard Robinson and Brady Hoke were asked about the dirty play. Here’s both responses via MGOBlog:
(Denard) Did you feel like they were playing dirty? “No. We were playing football. It’s a dirty game.”
(Denard) Was it a cheap shot? “I don’t know.”
(Hoke) Did you prepare your players for the dirty play? “No. I don’t know how they played dirty. They had some personal fouls and late hits on the quarterback. You can get those all the time.”
