The SMU Mustangs and head coach Larry Brown were dealt a tough blow on Selection Sunday when the 25th ranked Mustangs were snubbed by the NCAA Tournament Committee. SMU was 23-9 with a 12-6 record in the American Athletic Conference but the bad losses proved to be too much.

Before the bracket was unveiled, SMU was listed as a -2000 favorite to make the field (risking $20 would have paid $1)
