The Lansing State Journal did a piece on four-star Michigan forward signee Brandon Johns. Ranked as the No. 69 recruit in 2018, Johns, an East Lansing native, talked about when he called Tom Izzo to share the news he was gonna become a Wolverine:
Johns, a senior forward and four-star recruit at East Lansing High School, turned down offers from Purdue, Texas, California and Pittsburgh, among others.
He also shunned MSU and head coach Tom Izzo, who had been recruiting him since seventh grade. Before Johns inked his letter of intent Nov. 10, he reached out to all the coaches who had sought his services.
The local call was the toughest.
“Yeah, he went on a whole rant,” Johns said of Izzo. “That was not what I expected. It wasn’t easy.
“We built a relationship.”
Izzo gave a terse statement regarding Johns’ decision.
“If he’s happy, I’m happy for him,” Izzo said.
Michigan and Michigan State square off this Saturday in East Lansing.
Johns is part of the No. 3 ranked basketball class in 2018 that features five-star Ignas Brazdeikis, four-stars PG David DeJulius, C Colin Castleton and three-star SG Adrien Nunez.
