After the Pittsburgh Penguins made major moves this week acquiring defenseman Douglas Murray, and forwards Brendan Morrow and Jarome Iginla, they played their first game on Saturday with their new lineup. Unfortunately for the Penguins, they had some bad luck when defenseman Brooks Orpik fired a slap shot that appeared to be deflected by an Islanders’ stick. The puck went right for Sidney Crosby and hit him right in the mouth. Crosby was down in obvious pain immediately after and will not be returning to the game.
There is no word on how serious the injury is, but Penguins fans are likely holding their breath. Crosby has had well-documented concussion problems and he has been simply amazing when healthy. This year he leads the league with 56 points in 35 games, 11 more than Steven Stamkos who is in second.
UPDATE: Sounds like Sid the Kid is going to need a new set of teeth and already had surgery on his broken jaw.
Crosby off to hospital to repair damage after taking puck to the face in 1st period. Dental work likely. #TSN
