Referee uses GoPro to film Detroit Red Wings-Grand Rapids Griffins scrimmage

On Tuesday January 15th, the Detroit Red Wings held a scrimmage with the Grand Rapids Griffins at Compuware Ice Arena in order to better prepare for the NHL regular season.  With a shortened season there wasn’t any time for preseason games, so the Red Wings decided to have an intersquad scrimmage with the Grand Rapids Griffins.  Each team was composed of half Red Wings and half Griffins in order to better balance the teams out.

To make things more unique and entertaining the Referee wore a helmet camera for the game to record footage and to give the fans a referee ice-level view.  This was extremely cool to see, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they are testing things like this to see if it is plausible to use it during actual NHL games.  It would add a whole new dynamic to television broadcasts and give fans a fantastic view on replays of certain goals.
