This was a pretty interesting series of events. Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Korbinian Holzer and Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane were pushing and shoving in the corner and it looked like that they might fight. Kane knew Holzer was bigger than him and declined Holzer’s attempt to fight. Holzer had already thrown his gloves off and started to awkwardly pick his equipment back up when Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian stepped up and accepted Holzer’s offer.
Holzer did a decent job against Bogosian considering he was caught off-guard and it was his first career NHL fight, but Bogosian gets the win here. Holzer weighs in at 6’3″ 206 lbs and was given 5 minutes for fighting and an unsportsmanike conduct, while Bogosian weighs in at 6’2″ 190 lbs and was given 5 minutes for fighting, 2 minutes for instigating and a 10 minute misconduct.
It was a good job by Bogosian to stand up for Kane and make sure the Jets’ star player doesn’t have to fight. Perhaps for Holzer’s next fight, he will keep his gloves on long enough to make sure his opponent will actually fight him. Meanwhile, the past two games have seen the development of a bit of a rivalry between the Winnipeg Jets and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Too bad with the new NHL realignment that will get squashed before it really has time to start.
